Three photographers who have shaped KAIDO (街道), an independent photo gallery in Tokyo, are coming to Seoul on Saturday, October 10. The venue is P/A/S/M in Seocho-gu. An original print exhibition, a book signing, and a slide show take place together, with no fee and no registration.

The visitors are Koji Onaka, Haruna Sato, and Susumu Fujita. P/A/S/M and Gallery Negative are hosting the event together.

What KAIDO is

It began in Shinjuku in the 1980s. Koji Onaka and Susumu Fujita were both active at CAMP, a legendary independent photo gallery in Shinjuku at the time. In 1988 Onaka opened Gallery KAIDO, and Fujita was there at the start. Onaka has worked within the current of Japanese independent photography ever since.

What the three bring to Seoul are original prints, photo books, and the story of KAIDO. The slide show presents the gallery and the photographers' work in their own words.

The three

Koji Onaka photographs travel, cities, and ordinary moments of daily life with a quiet, lyrical eye. He has published many photo books, including DISTANCE and Slow Boat. He still shoots on film and makes his own prints in the darkroom.

Haruna Sato records small, personal moments of everyday life. Her ICHI NO HI series captures days and the passing of time like pages from a diary, and she has continued her work through photo books such as since I was 25 and YUYU HAREBARE and through exhibitions.

Susumu Fujita has pursued personal, intense work over many years, from the night streets of 1980s Tokyo to black-and-white photographs of places across Japan. His key photo books include Roppongi Soul Embassy, Silver Eye, and BLINK.

Haruna Sato stands beside the two who started together at CAMP. How differently do photographs from the same gallery look side by side? The prints will answer that.

The schedule

After the slide show there is time to talk with the photographers informally. Light refreshments are provided.
