The fragrance brand Granhand is holding its film photo award for the seventh time. Entries open on Wednesday, September 16 and close on Tuesday, September 22. Seven days.
Same theme as last year
「Moments Remembered by Scent」 (향으로 기억되는 순간들). The same theme as the 6th edition. This is why a company that makes perfume runs a photo contest. A smell and a photograph both pass in an instant, and when you meet them again later, they pull up everything you had forgotten all at once.
There are four categories: nature, people, everyday life and still life. Entrants choose which one to enter.
One photo is all you send
One photo shot on film. Submit it as a JPG file, at least 3000 pixels and 300dpi. That spec lets you use a scan as is, but a lab's standard scan sometimes falls short of 3000 pixels, so it is better to open the file and check first.
There are no eligibility restrictions. The call for entries says only "anyone who loves film photography."
Prizes
- Grand Prize, 1 winner iPad Air 11. The work appears in Granhand's printed handouts, and the winner does a remote interview.
- Excellence Prize, 1 winner Insta360 GO Ultra.
- Category Prizes, 4 winners AirPods 4.
- Honorable Mentions, up to 10
What stands out more than the prizes is the Grand Prize's place in the handouts. The photo is printed in material that goes out with Granhand's stores and products. Results are announced on Monday, September 28.
A thousand people entered last year
The 6th edition drew 1,000 entrants. The 27 winning works hung for three days at Jiwooheon in Bukchon. Started with the 1st edition in 2019 and held every year since, the contest reaches its seventh edition this year.
The two photos above are last year's Grand Prize and Excellence Prize, taken from the Granhand website. One is an evening seen through a gap in the curtains. The other is a table set before a memorial portrait. Both capture places where a smell comes to mind first.
Before you enter
Entries go through the application form below. The call for entries does say, though, that you must read the contest guidelines on the website before applying. Category and file specs are screened before judging.
Loading a fresh roll now and shooting it is cutting it close. Choosing from what you have already shot is the realistic option.
Closes Tuesday, September 22
All it takes is one photo shot on film. Pick one category (nature, people, everyday life or still life) and enter.
